Problems Caused By Insects
The main problem caused by insects is the spread of diseases, particularly skin irritations and gastric complaints caused by insect droppings on food, and around the home. Common problems include the spread of dysentery, diarrhoea, tuberculosis, cholera, typhoid and gastroenteritis among others.
Human food stores, whether huge accumulations in silos and warehouses or small domestic reserves, offer relatively enormous food stocks to insects (and mites) which can live and breed in them. The only limitation is that most stored products have a lower moisture content than when they were growing crops in the field. Consequently the insect pests best able to thrive in stored food are those that have adapted to dry environments and many of them are able to conserves the water produced by their own metabolism. The majority of the insects that are collectively known as Stored Product Insects come from two orders of insects - the beetles and moths.

Cockroaches Cockroaches are considered to be one of the most noxious of pests and are regarded as a major public health pest. Not only can they eat and contaminate foodstuffs but they are also capable of spreading diseases. They prefer warm and humid environments and so can often be found in kitchens and hospitals where they can come into contact with pathogenic micro-organisms. They are also found in drains and sewers and are known to eat faeces and so their exposure to disease organisms is considerable. These organisms can be found on the outside and within the gut of the insects.

Ants Black Garden Ants have a wide spectrum of acceptable foods and they are particularly attracted to sweet substances. One successful foraging worker is able to communicate the information to her co-workers, with the inevitable result of vast numbers of worker ants invading and incidentally contaminating suitable human foods. Although not inherently 'dirty' insects, they must sometimes walk across unsavory and unclean areas during their foraging exercises and this leads to ants invading houses being considered unacceptable.

Flies The varied activities and species of flies can lead to a wide range of effects that these insects can have on human activities. Many of the effects are beneficial with flies being important pollinators and important in the breakdown of the food and animal waste that is produced. However, flies can also be serious environmental pests causing severe discomfort and even death.

Fleas Although fleas generally are considered to be vectors of disease, there is little evidence to suggest that the Cat and Dog Fleas transmit any serious illnesses to humans. Far more important are the highly irritating nature of flea bites on some humans, especially children, and the ability of these species to remain dormant in buildings over long periods. Even if pet bedding is disposed of in an attempt to eradicate fleas, re-infestation will occur unless extremely thorough cleaning has taken place. It is likely that unnoticed cocoons will remain within the carpet or under carpets, just waiting for some form of stimulation from a potential host to emerge and start the cycle again.
